AAPL finally turning positive YTD 20131114

AAPL finally turning positive YTD, still down 0.6%, without consideration for dividend.
For the next one month and a half left in 2013, I expect AAPL to rise to 550 a share. The product cycle kicked in, with iPhone 5s, and new iPad etc. Management led by CEO Cook better delivers good results or Corporate Raider Icahn will have an upper hand in the fight.

Apple will never the the $1T company. but its stock may go to $1000 as the outstanding share will go down to 0.5B, making it a $500B company. Still the biggest around the world. Current share is 0.9B.

A reduction of 400M shares sounds a dauting task. Apple retired 40M shares in 2013 alone as of now. Whole 2013 expects 50M shares reduction. Apple's stock buyback spent $16 billion over the June quarter buying 36 million shares off the market at an average price of $444.44, then bought up another 10.4 million shares with a $5 billion repurchase in the September quarter at an average price of around $480.
The cost to buy 100M shares of Apple, cost as of now $52B, less 300M dividend payment, about $50B net cost.

Ackman in the news 20140422 Self dealing?

Today 8/9/2013, J.C. Penney stock sank below $13 a share on the news of Ackman letter, demanding firing of CEO Ullman who was pushed out by Ackman.

the JCP saga

In 2011, Ackman pushed out Ullman and hired Ron Johnson, who had served as Apple's head of retail. Johnson's tenure at JCP was tumultuous and ultimately ended up with the company's board pushing him out. Even Ackman agreed with that decision. Johnson's failure was obvious from the beginning. He commuted from his home at Palo Alto CA to JCP headquarters Plano TX by airplane. Why didn't he move his family? He figured correctly that the employment with JCP was short term. Still the distance matters. The Distance from Palo Alto, California to Plano, Texas is 1473.1 miles. Approximate flight duration time from Plano to Palo Alto is 3 hours, according to a website .

Basically JCP was raided by Ackman. Ackman fired Ullman and hired RJ. RJ's chic failed. RJ was fired. Ullman back to CEO. Now Ackman wanted to fire Ullman again.

Ackman Amassed Allergan Stake Under Botox Maker’s Radar

April 22 (Bloomberg) -- Valeant Pharmaceuticals International offered to buy Allergan in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $45.7 billion that will give the Canadian company the Botox wrinkle treatment. Pershing Square Capital Management LP, the fund run by Bill Ackman, Allergan’s largest shareholder, supports the offer, Valeant said. Stephanie Ruhle reports on Bloomberg Television’s “In The Loop.” (Source: Bloomberg)
Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management LP amassed almost 10 percent of Allergan Inc. in less than two months without raising many eyebrows at the Botox-maker he’s now targeting in a hostile takeover bid.
Now, Ackman’s activist hedge fund has partnered with serial acquirer Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (VRX) to buy Allergan for about $46 billion in a cash-and-stock deal. The goal is to reap savings by joining the companies’ skin- and eye-care businesses.
Ackman began buying Allergan stock Feb. 25 and then in March switched to over-the-counter call options to accumulate his stake, regulatory filings show. A buying pause April 9 and 10 helped lower the price, before Ackman resumed in earnest April 11, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Related:
Valeant was interested in the unusual arrangement with Ackman because the hedge fund could amass more of Allergan’s shares before making a public disclosure, said a person familiar with the matter. The shares rallied the most since 2009 in the six days before the stake and bid were disclosed yesterday, soaring 22 percent, and trading volume last week approached the highest level in a year.
U.S. securities law “allows a company like Pershing to get a running start as there is not disclosure of the intent to take over a firm” until 10 days after acquiring more than 5 percent of the target’s shares, said James Cox, a professor at Duke University School of Law.

Voracious Acquirer

Ackman is partnering with a voracious acquirer in Valeant Chief Executive Officer Mike Pearson, who took the helm at the Laval, Quebec-based company in 2008 and has since spent at least $19 billion buying more than 35 companies.
Valeant today offered $48.3 in cash and 0.83 of its shares for each Allergan share, in a deal valued at $45.7 billion based on yesterday’s closing price. Allergan gained more than 16 percent to $164.95 as of 1:27 p.m. in New York, giving it a market value of $49 billion.
“We firmly believe that combining Valeant and Allergan would create an unrivaled platform for growth and value creation in health care, and we look forward to finalizing and announcing the terms of our proposal shortly,” Valeant said in an e-mail.
Pershing Square supports the offer, Valeant said in a statement, and will elect to accept Valeant’s stock in the deal, becoming a shareholder of the combined company.

Spending Spree

Rather than spend what Pearson says can be billions of dollars developing drugs from scratch, he buys companies with existing products, such as Bausch & Lomb for $8.7 billion last year, his biggest acquisition to date. That spending spree has left Valeant with debt of about $17 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg -- another reason a partnership on a deal this big makes sense.

“These guys are all finding out that they have to do different approaches because sometimes all that public information doesn’t help their cause, they wind up paying more for a company,” said Carlo Panaccione, co-founder of Navigation Group in Redwood Shores, California, who oversees around $375 million. Alliances like this may help deals “without having to necessarily show your hand too early.”
Almost 24 million Allergan shares changed hands last week, the most since June, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The stock was up 28 percent this year through yesterday, the ninth-best performer in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. Ackman spent about $76 million on Allergan shares in late February, according to a regulatory filing. He then bought about $3 billion in over-the-counter calls in March and April.

Larger Deal

Pearson reiterated in a Bloomberg interview last month that he could do a deal in 2014 comparable to Bausch & Lomb, after telegraphing his intention to do a larger deal at a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. conference in January.
Last year, Valeant tried unsuccessfully to acquire Actavis Plc, Bloomberg reported. In February, Actavis agreed to buy Forest Laboratories Inc. in a $25 billion deal, as other pharmaceutical companies race to gain scale and add products by acquiring rivals.
Valeant itself was earlier successfully targeted by activist investment fund ValueAct Holdings LP, and the firm’s president, Mason Morfit, joined the company’s board.

Higher Returns

Valeant was pursuing long-shot disease cures when ValueAct invested in 2007. Morfit helped convince the board to turn to less sexy, higher-return branded generics and recruit Pearson as its CEO, with overhauled compensation practices that reward shareholder outperformance. Valeant has since grown into a $42 billion drugmaker from a $1.4 billion company.
Morfit is leaving Valeant’s board and was not included in the proxy statement issued today, ValueAct CEO Jeff Ubben said on the sidelines of a conference in New York.
Ackman structured the Allergan-Valeant deal and approached Valeant with the idea, Ubben told reporters today. Making the takeover bid with Ackman’s 10 percent stake gives Valeant “a running start on the vote, and a bit of a block position,” Ubben said.
Valeant had for more than a year been seeking a friendly deal with Allergan, Ubben said. Valeant made “overtures” to Allergen for more than 18 months, according to its statement.
Pearson also bought two companies last year that sold themselves amid pressure from another activist investor. Voce Capital Management LLC, a San Francisco investment fund, sent letters to management of both Obaji Medical Products Inc. and Solta Medical Inc. urging them to seek buyers. Valeant snapped up Obaji in March 2013 for $376 million and Solta in December for $263 million.
Allergan confirmed in a separate statement today that it received an unsoliticed takeover proposal from Valeant.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg issued a wide-ranging dissent on behalf of herself and Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan,

The liberal justices were particularly solicitous of Kennedy on Wednesday because the Reagan appointee gave every indication that he would be voting to strike down DOMA, as it is known. Early in the oral argument, the conservatives — Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts (a silent Clarence Thomas can be assumed to be their tacit tagalong) — explored the idea that the case might be disposed of on the technical grounds that no injury had been proved, a technique that would avoid a ruling calling DOMA unconstitutional..

WINTEL surged today, now what?

WINTEL (Window + Intel or Microsoft and Intel) surged today 4/9/2013. See below,

INTC $21.75 3.13% 4% 1% 1% 5% -22%

MSFT surged 3.57% to $29.61 a share, while Intel trailed a little bit. This surge is extremely amazing in the post-PC era where WINTEL are generally viewed as underdogs. Mobil is the key growth area. The only thing I can think of Warren Buffett is buying WINTEL. He once owned INTC but sold all his INTC. He never owned MSFT though. A recent Bloomberg suggested that he is looking at fallen Suntech.

One of the United State’s first nanotechnology companies, NanoInk, has gone belly up, joining a host of high-profile nanotechnology-based companies that have shuttered their doors in the last 12 months: KonarkaA123 Systems andEner1.
These other three companies were all tied to the energy markets (solar in the case of Konarka and batteries for both A123 and Ener1), which are typically volatile, with a fair number of shuttered businesses dotting their landscapes. But NanoInk is a venerable old company in comparison to these other three and is more in what could be characterized as the “picks-and-shovels” side of the nanotechnology business, microscopy tools. NanoInk had been around so long that they were becoming known for their charity work in bringing nanotechnology to the Third World
So, what happened? The news tells us that NanoInk’s primary financial backer, Ann Lurie, pulled the plug on her 10-year and $150-million life support of the company. After a decade of showing little return on her investment, Lurie decided that enough was enough. But that’s like explaining that a patient died because their heart stopped. What caused the heart to stop?

2007 Oct 31 (Reuters) - Nanosphere Inc, , on Wednesday raised $98 million with an initial public offering that priced at the bottom of a forecast range. The 7-million share offering priced at $14 per share, compared with a forecast range of $14 to $16, according to an underwriter. $14 a share now,

Microsoft closed above $28 on 1/29/2013

Today Microsoft closed $28.01 on 1/29/2013, according to Yahoo Finance. And it is at 2-month high. As an MSFT equity investor, it is sad to MSFT underperformed in 2012.

Day's change One week change One month change one quarter change 2013 YTD change% one year change Price

DIA 0.42% 1.82% 6.62% 6.61% 4.08% 10.30% 139.23

All tabulations don't take dividends into account.

What is the future of MSFT? Can its equity investors, like me, get awarded in higher price, in addition to its dividend yield which is 3.3% according to Yahoo Finance shown below.

  1. Growth, hardly any. Today it announced  Office 365 Home Premium, a cloud-based. It appears to be rushed. As iPhone and Android are not included. Trust me. Legions of lawyers from the three sides of Apple, Google, and Microsoft are fighting to death. Apple lives on iPhone, and iPhone's the two most popular apps goes to Google's Map and Youtube. Apple is mad as hell but Google spends all money to develop software for iPhones but didn't get any revenue sharing from Apple.
  2. Catalysts, none. Spin off Xbox?
  3. Leadership change. We need Bill Gates come back as CEO.
  4. MSN is phasing out, but not in China.
  5. China, China, China. Can MSFT let enterprise users in China to pay up? PetroChina and China Mobil  certainly can afford to pay license fees to MSFT. Those fees may have to be parked in China, though.
